The 210 Ml Vlakfontein reservoir is currently being constructed to augment water storage at Vlakfontein in the Mapleton system. This the largest cylindrical post-tensioned reservoir in the country.
To our knowledge, this is also the largest circular post-tensioned reservoir in the world. Currently, the largest reservoirs are at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where there is an array of 11 circular post-tensioned reservoirs with a capacity of 187,5 Ml each, which this reservoir will exceed with its capacity of 210Ml.
Rand Water’s brief for the project was for a unique and innovative design for the reservoir.
This led to the reservoir being cylindrical, unlike the majority of Rand Water reservoirs of this size. The reservoir structure is a reinforced concrete post-tensioned reservoir employing innovative design methods during design and construction:
• Innovative concrete mix design methods were employed to limit shrinkage and temperatures due to heat of hydration.
• Strict innovative early age protection measures and curing methods were employed to ensure durable concrete.
• The concrete finish is exceptional.
As a result, the Vlakfontein Reservoir has been nominated by CHRYSO (the concrete admixtures manufacturer for the project) for an award for innovation and invention in concrete and has been recognised by the CSSA as a prestigious candidate. The Fulton Awards, hosted by Cement and Concrete SA (CSSA), are the South African construction, civil engineering and architectural industries’ premier accolades for excellence in concrete.
